Knowing The Rules Of Poker
By Bob Bastian
Poker is one of the most popular card games played in homes and casinos alike. Even though winning depends heavily on odds, there is a certain amount of skill involved in playing a successful game. Knowing the rules and understanding what to do in different situations is crucial to a good game. So what are the rules of Poker?

When the concept of betting is introduced, the game of gains a good bit of skill and psychology.

This isn't to say that there isn't skill involved when a bet isn't placed and nothing is at risk, there just isn't as much.

This is a very basic primer into the rules of poker. For now, we'll start with the very basics.

Poker is played with a standard deck of 52 cards. Some variant games use more than one deck or add a few cards here and there called jokers. The cards are ranked from high low: ace, king, queen, jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and ace.

Ace can be high or low but is usually high. There are four suits: spades, hearts, diamonds, and clubs. No suit is higher than another.

All hands contain five cards. The player with the highest hand wins. Some games even have what are called wild cards, and can take on whatever suit and rank their possessor desires. At times, jokers may be used as wild cards, while other times the game specifies which cards are wild, (deuces, one-eyed jacks, ETC.

There are many different types of games, each with its own varying set of rules. Seven card stud

and Texas Hold'em are two of the most commonly played types of poker.

The rules for private games will also vary to a degree from those of casino because at a casino the stakes are much higher and there are more players in the game.

It is essential to understand how the hands are ranked. This lets you know which ones to play, when to raise, when to check, and when to fold. The hands are ranked as follows from high to low.

Five Of A Kind
Straight Flush
Four Of A Kind
Full House
Flush
Straight
Three Of A Kind
Two Pair
Pair
High Card

No matter which game you play, no the rules. Develop your skill and know how to use it. Though the different types of games have varying rules, the basic concepts remain the same. Understand your hand ranking as this, too, does not change. If the particular game you are playing uses wild cards, know and understand what they are and what they do. Most importantly, enjoy your game and have fun.
